Former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been reinstated by the social media platform’s new boss Elon Musk, but that doesn’t mean the former tweeter-in-chief will end his legal battle against the San Francisco-based company, his lawyer said.
Trump’s attorney, John Cole, told Bloomberg News Jan. 6, 2021 His client refused to drop his appeal of an earlier court ruling to throw out his lawsuit against Twitter for banning him from the service in the wake of the riots at the US Capitol on 6, 2021.
In May, a San Francisco federal judge appointed by Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, threw out his lawsuit against Twitter.
Judge James Donato also rejected Trump’s attempts to challenge Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects social media platforms from lawsuits for content their users post.
Legal experts predict that the case has little chance of winning in court. Instead, observers say it’s a political move initiated by Trump, who is also suing Facebook’s parent company Meta and Alphabet’s Google, in a bid to drum up support among his followers.
Coley said Musk’s decision to follow through on his promise to restore Trump’s account did nothing to change the calculation. He told Bloomberg that Musk would need to consult with Trump’s team before making a decision.
“There’s more to it than just letting him back in, so we want to talk to see if we can figure something out,” Cole told Bloomberg.
Since Musk announced on Nov. 19 that Trump was allowed back on Twitter, Coley says there has been no conversation between the site’s new management team and the former president’s aides.
Cole said his famous client “told me I didn’t like it [in resuming Twitter activities]But that could change.”
Trump founded his own social media site, Truth Social, after being banned from mainstream platforms.
